Murine Muscle Mechanics Workshop

Event Dates: Apr 29 - May 1, June 16 - 18 & November 4 - 6

Event Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Program Directors: Dr. Chris Perry & Dr. Arthur Cheng

Brands: Aurora Scientific and Kent Scientific

Hosted at York University’s Muscle Health Research Centre, this three-day workshop blends lectures on the fundamentals of muscle physiology with intensive laboratory training. Participants will gain experience in in-vitro, in-situ, and in-vivo muscle mechanics techniques using industry-leading instrumentation from Aurora Scientific and Kent Scientific.

Produced in partnership with Endpoint Preclinical, the Murine Muscle Mechanics Workshop equips preclinical researchers with the knowledge and technical skill required to effectively measure, analyze, and interpret skeletal muscle function in rodent models.

This program is recognized by the American Physiological Society (APS) and represents a unique opportunity for hands-on education in experimental design, surgical practice, and functional data acquisition.

Topics Covered

  • Muscle architecture, principles of function, and benefits of in-vivo assessment
  • Surgical approaches for in-vitro and in-situ preparation, including dissection and suturing techniques
  • Proper handling of tissues, instruments, and live subjects
  • Optimizing tissue viability and animal monitoring throughout the procedure
  • Experimental design considerations and analysis strategies
  • End-to-end mechanics testing of EDL, SOL, DIA, TA, Quadriceps, Dorsiflexor, and Plantarflexor muscles
  • Core data outputs and interpretation: twitch, tetanus, fatigue, force-frequency, eccentric, and force-velocity measurements
